Hello. I’m Nick Speak, a slowly-retiring coach and optimistic writer, based in Geelong, Australia.
And, then for this venture ‘SpeakingCricket.’ Here, my intent is to bring you my contemplations, perspectives, and self-funded estimations on all things Cricket, and beyond. Sports are important to me, I relish the chance to study the human experience, especially as related to sport, and find a curious sense of fulfilment in expressing this. My writing might move beyond the realm of sport, at times, but I guarantee to bring you only my truest, clearest perspective.
The quirky game of cricket sent me to many parts of the globe; Australia and New Zealand, the Caribbean, Southern Africa, and the Subcontinent. On reflection, travel allowed me to see first-hand the diverse cultural differences that the wider world offered. I would say a more street-smart education.
Cricketers continue to enjoy plenty of 'down time'—this allowed me to begin writing in 2013. Backpagelead, a Melbourne online sports service, published my Ashes coverage in 2013 and 2014. The New Daily also published snippets of my Ashes content.
Today, post-covid, we have to appreciate every moment that presents itself. Sport, and sports commentary, will continue to play a pivotal part in helping us navigate through the challenging times; providing hope, celebration, and sometimes despair.
I will try to share this with you—not so much despair.
Substack is a unique platform; it benefits from an infinite reach; it is strongly independent, uncensored, and most importantly, free of: advertisements, clickbait, and other big brother tendencies. I look forward to connecting with like-minded readers.
I hope you enjoy 'SpeakingCricket' and all its variations.
